ICELAND: A Travel Diary Days 1&2

Who else is guilty for taking 2000 photos whilst on holiday and not doing anything with them? Because this is my own pet peeve, and I do it EVERY single time. So, I thought I’d do something slightly different, instead of just one or two posts on things I got up to, I’m going to post a photo diary every couple of days.

Every summer I’m lucky enough to go on holiday with my boyfriend’s family, a few years back we went to the South of France and stayed in two different villas around Provence. Last year we spent 10 days in beautiful Croatia, and this year instead of a hot beach holiday, we are in Iceland! It’s not your usual summer holiday, believe you me, it was very strange packing my waterproof coat, scarf and thermals for a holiday in August. But it’s a place where we all wanted to visit at least once! Anyone who I know that has been said it was one of the best places they've ever visited.. So I have very high expectations!

We arrived early Sunday morning, picked up our hire car and drove to Reykjavik, where we are staying for 3 nights. We found a cafe for lunch, wandered around, had several coffees (the 2am wake up call..)  and went on a boat ride to see the puffins!

Stumbled upon a beautiful cafe on the harbour called Röst! Perfect spot for a coffee, overlooking the sea!
You may have already seen this post on my instagram (@kirbysmall).. I kinda fell in love with the interiors of Röst.

Puffins are so cute and they look so animated in real life!

The first thing I realised was when everyone warned me about the prices, they were not joking.. at all. A single panini cost £22, coffee is £5 a cup and a bowl of soup is a mere £16... So if you're travelling to Iceland, I highly recommend you bringing lots of snacks in your suitcase. It definitely won't be a boozy holiday, at £8-12 a pint and £13+ for a glass of wine this seems pretty extortionate. Luckily, the views wherever you look are amazing, almost out of this world. And the food we have had so far (apart from the below average panini) has been delicious. I can see why everyone loves Iceland.

A quick stop for dinner in Cafe Paris before an early night!

I opted for the cod gratin - so tasty!

Day 2 consisted of a road trip around the Golden Circle, first up was the Pingvellir National Park - the place where the continental plates part.. very cool. It was also where the Vikings established the worlds first democratic parliament!

The valley caused by the meeting of the North American and Eurasion tectonic plates.

Then a further drive to Geysir, one of the most famous tourist attractions in Iceland and a rather smelly area (the sulphur is  strong!), but amazing to see the hot springs shoot up to around 20-30m in the air.

View of the Geysirs bubbling away before it shoots!
And finally, nearby the famous Gullfoss (translates to Golden Falls) the spectacular double cascade waterfall! It was beautiful! The sun was shining and so we caught a glimmer of a rainbow..

Beautiful view of Gullfoss and a hint of a rainbow!

For dinner we had booked a table at Messinn, an amazing seafood restaurant in the centre of Reykjavik. Beautiful food, good vibes and not too pricey for the quality you get here. Definitely recommend booking a table as it got pretty busy!

I couldn't choose.. So I went for the salted cod..

and the salmon dish! Amazing food!

I'm going to keep posting every other day to keep you updated, and it gives me a place to capture all of these beautiful memories!!
